Sends the owner's question to the independent veterinarians who answer on PawsRx. They are alerted the moment it arrives. This returns a reference, not an answer: a veterinarian writes the answer themselves and it is emailed to the owner. Never answer the clinical question yourself instead of calling this, and never characterise what a vet is likely to say while it is waiting. If the animal may be in an emergency, tell the owner to go to an emergency veterinary hospital now rather than send a question.

ask_a_vet

Cancels an appointment request by the reference request_appointment returned. Only when the owner asks to cancel. Cancelling an already-cancelled request changes nothing.

cancel_booking

The status of an appointment request by its reference. Returns requested, confirmed or cancelled. Only the reference works, not an email address.

check_booking_status

Open appointment times at one vet practice. Use when the user asks when a practice can see their animal: today, tomorrow, this week or at a set time. Needs a practice_id from find_vets. Times are in the practice's own timezone. Where the practice keeps no online calendar, has_calendar is false and there are no times to pick; an appointment can still be requested with request_appointment.

check_availability

Find veterinary clinics and animal hospitals in the United States. Use when the user wants to find or choose a vet: a general vet, an emergency or urgent-care vet, or a vet for a particular animal, including exotics such as rabbits, birds, reptiles, ferrets and guinea pigs. For example: 'find a vet near me for my dog', 'rabbit vet in Los Angeles', 'exotic vet in Chicago', 'vets open Saturday morning in Austin', 'where can I take my dog for urgent care in Denver'. Filters by city, state or ZIP, the animal, the day and time of day, and free text such as 'urgent care'. Returns practices from the PawsRx directory of 26,000+ US practices, each with the species it treats, its hours, and whether it is open in the asked window. Results match the filters given; they are not ranked or paid.

find_vets

Pet grooming salons in a US city with the groom menus and prices they publish. Use when the user asks for a dog or cat groomer or what grooming costs in a city. With no city, or a city with no priced salons, returns the list of cities that have them.

groom_prices

Details about one vet practice returned by find_vets: address, phone, hours, species treated, and its PawsRx page. Use when the user wants a practice's contact details or hours, or whether it treats their animal.

practice_details

Requests an appointment at any listed practice on the owner's behalf. Every practice in the directory takes a request; PawsRx places it and confirms back to the owner by email. This returns a reference and the status 'requested' — it is NOT a confirmed booking, so never tell the owner it is booked or confirmed until check_booking_status says confirmed. If the animal may be in an emergency, do not use this: tell the owner to go to an emergency veterinary hospital now.

request_appointment

What veterinary services cost, from prices US practices publish themselves. Use when the user asks what a vet service costs, e.g. 'what does a dog dental cost', 'how much is a vet checkup', 'cost of a cat spay in Texas'. Returns the low, median and high published price with named example practices and where each price was published. Published prices, not a quote; the practice sets the final price.

price_lookup

Whether one practice treats a given animal, is taking new clients, and lets a time be picked online. Use when the user asks 'does this vet see rabbits' or 'are they taking new patients'. Answers null rather than guessing when the practice has not published it; tell the user it is unknown and to ask the practice.
