OpenAlex is a free, open index of the world's scholarly research: more than 250 million works (journal articles, preprints, books, datasets), the citations that connect them, and 100 million+ author profiles linked to the institutions, journals, funders and topics behind them. The data is CC0 and maintained by OurResearch, a nonprofit. With this connector Claude can search the literature the way a librarian would. Ask for the most-cited papers on a topic since a given year, recent open-access reviews, or everything a lab has published. Search by keyword with Boolean operators, or describe what you're looking for in a sentence and let semantic search find papers that match the meaning. Trace who cites a paper and what it builds on. Paste a bibliography and have every reference checked against the index, with DOIs filled in and fabricated citations flagged. For a systematic search, Claude writes the query in OQL, OpenAlex's query language, previews the count and a sample, tightens it, and hands you the exact query to reproduce or cite. It also answers the questions research offices, libraries and funders ask. Profile an institution's, funder's or topic's output in one call: volume by year and type, open-access share, share in the top 10% most cited, strongest fields, top collaborating countries and institutions. Find the researchers at a university who work on a topic, the open-access journals in a field with no fees, or the companies in a country publishing on a technology. Every result comes back with title, authors, venue, year, citation count, field-weighted citation impact, open-access link and abstract, ready to cite. Full records include every author with affiliations and ORCID, funding, topics and citations by year. Sign in with a free OpenAlex account and the connector runs on your own API budget ($1 of usage per day free, more with prepaid usage or a plan). The connector is read-only and stores no conversation data.
